Zur Erinnerung an die erste urkundliche Erwähnung von Calbe durch Kaiser Otto I im Jahre 937

Zu drein' Schritt würdig durch das Tor
Der Hochwohlweise Rat hervor.

Gemächlich ging er aus zum Wald
Und fand dort eine Eiche bald.
"Nun höre, Meister Holzstecher -
Daraus mach' einen Roland Er!"

Mit Messer, Stichel, Stift und Schlag
Trat Kopf und Leib und Fuß zutag
Doch für die Arme - mögt verzeihn
Ihr Herrn! - ist dieser Stamm zu klein

Sie schritten wieder hin zum Wald
Und fanden auch das Stämmchen bald.
"Nun höre, Meister Holzstecher -
Daraus mach' nun die Arme Er!"

Ein Schwänschen gab die Stadt zum Lohn
Doch Roland fehlt - die Proportion!

Wohl hält er treulich seine Wacht,
Nur weint vor Scham er, kommt die Nacht.

The Roland

The Roland - a symbolic figure representing municipal freedom, the rights of free commerce, and autonomous courts - was first documented in 1381.

After a city hall fire in 1875, the Roland was kept in storage until the 1936, 1000-year Jubilaum when it was again placed before the city hall. The wooden Roland came to a bad end in the years following WWII. On account of fuel shortages, he served as heating material.

The current Roland was freshly produced from Cotta sandstone following the design of the sculptor Eberhard Gloss, and has been standing in front of city hall since July 2, 1976. Source
