lebt' ein Freundespaar,
Im Trinken fest, in Treue wahr.
In Mülsen there lived a pair of friends,
True blue loyal drinking pals.

Doch wie mal zu tief ins Glas sie geguckt,
hat der Eine den Anderen angespuckt.
Once they'd seen too deep in the glass,
The one did spit on the other, alas.

Der And're fühlt sich drob blamiert,
Den Einen er vor den Kadi zitiert.
Sorely embarassed, the other had felt,
He sued the one before the magistrate.

"Ich frage Dich, Kläger" der Kadi spricht,
"Warst wert Du des Anspuckens, warst Du es nicht?"
"I ask you, Plaintiff" the Magistrate said, "You were worth the spitting, were you not?" |
"Entscheide Dich, ob Ja, ob Nein,
Darnach soll die Straffe bemessen sein."
"Decide, Yes or No to determine how far your punishment will go." |
Schnell reist im Kläger der Entschluß,
Daß man die Antwort meiden muß.
The Plaintiff then quickly concluded,
That the answer must be eluded. |
Er läßt die Klage - Klage sein
Und läd den Freund zum Schappen ein.
He left the lawsuit - a complaint
And offered his friend a handshake. |
Noch als bezecht man heimwärts zog,
Tönt auf die Freundschaft manches hoch.
Homeward bound in a drunken haze,
Many a toast to friendship was made |
